WEBVTT Kind: captions Language: en-US 00:00:11.187 --> 00:00:18.257 OceanX is a nonprofit organization that was set up to develop a community around the ocean itself. 00:00:18.402 --> 00:00:25.343 It's an organization that runs an enormous research vessel to explore the world's oceans, and we combine 00:00:25.343 --> 00:00:28.153 scientific discovery and exploration with media. 00:00:29.621 --> 00:00:35.304 I first became familiar with FileMaker years ago, in an academic environment. I found that there were 00:00:35.304 --> 00:00:40.646 lots of things we needed to do, in terms of documenting, in terms of databasing, that simply weren't available anywhere. 00:00:40.646 --> 00:00:46.403 And, I'm a sort of mid-level programming guy, I'm not, like, high-end like my colleagues. And so, 00:00:46.403 --> 00:00:51.266 I got introduced to it, and we started building very simple applications that work with it, but those 00:00:51.266 --> 00:00:56.728 things immediately grew into these very elaborate applications, and I'm still programming in it for the past ten years. I'm still 00:00:56.728 --> 00:01:03.000 writing code for it, so I came to OceanX and I looked around and there were all these sort of high-end, enterprise, 00:01:03.000 --> 00:01:08.777 cloud-based things that people kept trying--honestly, trying and then putting down. And I said, "You know, 00:01:08.777 --> 00:01:12.554 I know this may be sort of different, but in our world, we work with this package." 00:01:12.554 --> 00:01:19.673 Uh, Vincent Pieribone had developed a system in FileMaker. Um, it's with--it had a lot of really great tools, when we saw it 00:01:19.673 --> 00:01:24.728 we said "Boy, this is a really interesting application he's building," and it was trying to work on the logistics for 00:01:24.728 --> 00:01:30.464 planning where the Athena would be, uh, traveling and how the...season would plan out. 00:01:30.688 --> 00:01:37.200 What makes Claris FileMaker so powerful is that it's at the very high end of the low-code experience, so 00:01:37.200 --> 00:01:44.682 low code means you can do things rapidly, a lot of things are figured out, you're not fussing with nasty details to get things applied, 00:01:44.682 --> 00:01:47.703 but at the same time, there's an extremely high level of power. 00:01:48.000 --> 00:01:57.931 Claris FileMaker has been, um, sort of the--our platform of choice because it gives you the ability to, um, not only have a really solid 00:01:57.931 --> 00:02:04.338 database infrastructure, but then, also the ability to customize that to our needs. 00:02:04.338 --> 00:02:14.436 This application really manages all of the data for the ship, especially in the planning-to-execution phase of the agenda. 00:02:20.907 --> 00:02:27.314 What we do is such a unique thing, OceanX. We combine operations on a vessel, we combine operations on shore. 00:02:27.367 --> 00:02:33.713 A problem that I really had not perceived that FileMaker so beautifully solved was the fact that, on the vessel, 00:02:33.713 --> 00:02:39.052 we have limited satellite communication, so all of the cloud-based programs are simply not gonna work on the ship. 00:02:39.052 --> 00:02:44.306 So what we did is, we developed a package on land that contains the information and a package that's on the 00:02:44.306 --> 00:02:50.279 ship--and when we do get good satellite communication, the guys at Kyo Logic created this amazing syncing platform between 00:02:50.279 --> 00:02:55.491 the FileMaker implementation on the vessel and the FileMaker implementation on land, and it rapidly 00:02:55.491 --> 00:02:59.689 syncs these two things together, and everybody's essentially working on the same set of data 00:02:59.689 --> 00:03:05.112 so FileMaker suddenly was a hero, because they were able to do all kinds of fantastic things. As soon as we get in satellite range, 00:03:05.112 --> 00:03:11.846 the two sync and that gives us the ability to go in and focus on actually doing what we want to do 00:03:11.846 --> 00:03:17.396 and orchestrating these missions rather than, you know, um, spending all of our time thinking about ways that 00:03:17.396 --> 00:03:21.256 would be to pop in information because it's too much to hold in your head, so you need somewhere 00:03:21.256 --> 00:03:24.228 for it all to live, and that's what FileMaker does for us.
